Few people know that the story of Sleeping Beauty actually has its origins in the Gamtoos Valley. The story is told there of Kosie Diedericks, who one night at the Patensie outdoor club downed an unorthodox amount of pinecone brandy through his greedy throat. Afterwards, in his drunken stupor, he wandered into the veld and fell asleep under a thorn tree. His girlfriend, Amanda, was a sturdy lady who liked second helpings and sweat. She was also so tall that she could hunt ducks with a rake. As befits a Calvinist companion, Amanda went to look for her beloved and found him under the tree. Out of breath, she whispered to him: “Dig in for me, Baberbekkie” and kissed him. Kosie woke up, looked deep into Amanda’s eyes and said: “Sanet, I missed you my old plough card.” Needless to say, Amanda was not very thick with laughter and smothered Kosie right there, under the tree, among her almighty bushes.
